About our Sunnyvale concrete contractor crew

A broad light-gray concrete patio with diagonal control joints and a dark border sits beside a house.

From a city crew to Sunnyvale driveways

I learned concrete on a city crew, pouring sidewalks and curbs and fixing what tree roots and time had broken. Tear out enough cracked, sunken slabs and you start to see the pattern, because nearly every one failed from underneath. That crew taught me a slab is only as good as what's under it. In 2013 I started Vertex Sunnyvale Concrete here in Sunnyvale to bring that same careful work to people's homes.

Thirteen years later, we're best known for driveways, patios and walks that sit flat and drain the way they should, and we take on foundations, retaining walls and decorative work too, all listed on our home page. Most of our calls come from homeowners, with some from small business and property owners. Water matters a lot here, since the city has mapped parts of Sunnyvale as flood hazard areas with their own rules for new construction. I still care most about the parts you can't see once the pour is done, like the base, the joints and where the water goes. I'd rather explain too much than leave you guessing, so send me your questions anytime.

What working with us looks like

These are the things you'll notice when we work on your driveway, patio or walk, from the first site visit to the day you step onto the new slab.

  • You deal with the owner

I come out myself to look at your site and write the estimate, so the person pricing your job is the one who knows what it takes. Our own crew does the work, and I'm on site checking it as it goes.

  • We get the base and drainage right first

We dig out and pack the subgrade, the soil and gravel your slab sits on, because concrete raked over loose dirt settles right along with it. We also check where the water runs so the slab sheds it away from your house, and if the budget gets tight, the base is the last place I'd cut, since you can redo a finish but not what's buried under it.

  • Permits checked before we schedule

Before we put you on the calendar, we check with the city's Permit Center on what your project needs. If it calls for a permit, we pull it, handle the paperwork and meet the inspector on site.

Licensing and insurance for your concrete job

  • California contractor license

California's Contractors State License Board licenses anyone who builds or alters a structure when the job needs a building permit, uses extra workers or runs $1,000 or more in labor and materials combined. That covers most concrete work on a house, and we're licensed and insured.
